The corolla tube length of the bumblebee-pollinated plant Isodon umbrosus shows conspicuous geographical variation, corresponding with the proboscis length of its bumblebee pollinators across its distributional range. We hypothesized that altitudinal variation in the pollinator assemblage is a principal factor mediating morphological and genetic differentiation among I. umbrosus populations. We examined determinants of the morphological and genetic differentiation of Isodon umbrosus by analyzing floral morphology and allozyme variation across the distributional range. A reanalysis of previous data confirmed that altitude was a good indicator of pollinator assemblages. Corolla tube length was highly variable among the 15 study populations, and genetic differentiation among the populations ( G ST = 0.360) was also highly significant. The differentiation in corolla tube length was explained by altitudinal difference, a proxy of the difference in pollinator assemblages. Genetic differentiation among populations also tended to be affected by the same factor, but statistical support was weak. To better understand the mechanisms responsible for morphological and genetic differentiation in I. umbrosus , we need to investigate altitudinally different populations over a narrower geographical scale.  相似文献

1. Species richness in a habitat patch is determined by immigration (regional) and extinction (local) processes, and understanding their relative importance is crucial for conservation of biodiversity. In this study, we applied the Island Biogeography concept to spring ponds connected to a river in southwestern Japan to examine how immigration and extinction processes interact to determine fish species richness in temporally variable environments. 2. Fish censuses were conducted 15 times in 13 study ponds at 1–4 month intervals from August 1998 through October 2000. Effects of habitat size (pond area), isolation (distance from the river) and temporal environmental variability (water level fluctuation) on (i) species richness, (ii) immigration and extinction rates and (iii) population size and persistence of each fish species were assessed. 3. The results revealed predominant effects of distance on species richness, immigration/extinction rates and population size and persistence. Species richness decreased with increasing distance but was not related to either pond area or water level fluctuation. A negative effect of distance on immigration rate was detected, while neither pond area nor water level fluctuation had significant effects on extinction rate. Further, population size and persistence of four species increased with decreasing distance, suggesting that, in ponds close to the river, immigrants from the river reduce the probability of extinction (i.e. provide a rescue effect), contributing to the maintenance of high species richness. 4. Overall results emphasise the importance of immigration processes, rather than extinction, in shaping patterns of species richness in our system. The predominant importance of immigration was probably because of (i) high temporal variability that negates habitat‐size effects and (ii) continuous immigration that easily compensates for local extinctions. Our results suggest that consideration of regional factors (e.g. connectivity, locations of source populations and barriers to colonisation) is crucial for conservation and restoration of local habitats.  相似文献

Landscape genetics holds promise for the forecasting of spatial patterns of genetic diversity based on key environmental features. Yet, the degree to which inferences based on single species can be extended to whole communities is not fully understood. We used a pristine and spatially structured community of three landlocked salmonids (Salvelinus fontinalis, Salmo salar, and Salvelinus alpinus) from Gros Morne National Park (Newfoundland, Canada) to test several predictions on the interacting effects of landscape and life history variation on genetic diversity, neutral divergence, and gene flow (m, migration rate). Landscape factors consistently influenced multispecies genetic patterns: (i) waterfalls created strong dichotomies in genetic diversity and divergence between populations above and below them in all three salmonids; (ii) contemporary m decreased with waterway distance in all three species, while neutral genetic divergence (θ) increased with waterway distance, albeit in only two taxa; (iii) river flow generally produced downstream‐biased m between populations when waterfalls separated these, but not otherwise. In contrast, we expected differential life history to result in a hierarchy of neutral divergence (S. salar > S. fontinalis > S. alpinus) based on disparities in dispersal abilities and population size from previous mark‐recapture studies. Such hierarchy additionally matched varying degrees of spatial genetic structure among species revealed through individual‐based analyses. We conclude that, whereas key landscape attributes hold power to predict multispecies genetic patterns in equivalent communities, they are likely to interact with species‐specific life history attributes such as dispersal, demography, and ecology, which will in turn affect holistic conservation strategies.  相似文献

Microsatellites were identified and characterized from Epimedium diphyllum, a species of barrenworts, both attractive garden plants and valuable medicinal plants. Some Japanese species of Epimedium are threatened with extinction, and are listed in the Red Data Book of plants in Japan. Natural hybrid zones also have been reported among some taxa of Japanese Epimedium. We developed eight polymorphic microsatellite primers for population genetic analyses of E. diphyllum. The numbers of alleles per locus ranged from 10 to 20, with observed levels of heterozygosity between 0.85 and 1.00. These primer sets yielded amplification in the other three Japanese Epimedium. These markers will be valuable for conservation genetics, evolutionary biology, pharmacognostic study, and horticultural study of Epimedium.  相似文献

1. In an experimental flume, we examined the effects of a biomass reduction and alteration of taxonomic composition, because of grazing by the fish Plecoglossus altivelis, on the net biomass accumulation of periphyton. 2. Grazed and ungrazed assemblages with different biomass and taxonomic composition were first prepared in fish enclosures and exclosures, respectively. These assemblages were then set out in the flume and incubated for 2 days under grazing‐free conditions to examine (i) the relationship between biomass and biomass accumulation rate and (ii) the effect of taxonomic composition on the relationship between these two. 3. The grazed and ungrazed assemblages were dominated by upright filamentous cyanobacteria and diatoms, respectively. The rate of biomass accumulation decreased with increasing periphyton biomass in both the grazed and ungrazed assemblages, and was lower in the grazed than the ungrazed assemblages at any biomass level. 4. The results showed that the reduction in biomass and the alteration of taxonomic composition due to fish grazing have opposite effects on biomass‐specific productivity. Biomass accumulation rate increased in response to biomass reduction, although a shift in dominance from diatoms to upright filamentous cyanobacteria decreased the overall productivity of the periphyton.  相似文献

To elucidate the specific associations of insects with glandular plants, the relationship between a plant bug and a wild azalea was examined. The plant bug Orthotylus gotoi Yasunaga (Hemiptera: Miridae) was found only on shrubs of Rhododendron macrosepalum Maxim. (Ericaceae) in Kyoto, central Japan. R. macrosepalum has leaves, stems, and sepals with dense stalked glands that trap and kill many arthropods. However, nymphs and adults of O. gotoi are able to move freely on R .  macrosepalum . O. gotoi frequently fed on carcasses of various arthropods trapped on R .  macrosepalum , whereas it rarely fed upon plant tissues. In laboratory experiments, O. gotoi nymphs mainly fed on the carcasses of insects, which resulted in enhanced rates of growth and metamorphosis, and adult O. gotoi lived longer when they were provided with insect carcasses. These observations and experiments suggest that O. gotoi is a scavenger. Chromosome motion in glycerol-isolated mitotic apparatus (MA) of sea urchin and starfish eggs was investigated with respect to nucleotide specificity and the effects of antisera against tryptic fragment (Fragment A) of flagellar dynein and starfish egg myosin. The motion was highly specific for ATP. GTP, ITP, CTP, UTP, and ADP caused no displacement of the chromosomes towards the poles. The anti-Fragment A serum completely inhibited chromosome motion in the MA of the sea urchin egg, while antiserum against starfish egg myosin as well as its γ-globulin fraction did not inhibit the motion in the isolated MA of the starfish egg, suggesting that chromosome motion depends upon dynein-microtubule but not upon myosin-actin interaction. In addition, colchicine completely suppressed the chromosome motion in vitro.  相似文献
